With winter comes a wide variety of positives and negatives. WIth the many positives of winter like the holidays and being able to spend time with friends and family also come negatives, most notably all the health related issues that winter brings. In this blog we will look at one of many negative health related issues that happen during the winter, as well as giving you insight into how you can remedy the situation.

Dry Skin

While not so much a full on “health problem,” dry skin in winter is incredibly common and a huge inconvenience for all who experience it. The cold and dry winter air has a tendency to leave our skin itchy, chapped, dry, and largely irritated. If not treated, it can lead to cracking, bleeding, and an overall high level of discomfort and irritation. While there are many ways to avoid our skin drying up in the winter, a few simple changes to our daily routine can greatly improve this.

Turn Down Your Shower

For starters, as comforting as it can be, taking long, hot showers in the winter will actually make our skin dry up even more. One of the best ways to remedy this is to take shorter showers as well as turning down the temperature significantly. A warm shower will feel almost as good as a hot one, and your skin will feel much better. Plus, you will be conserving water, which is always a good thing.

Humidifiers Are Key

Running a humidifier in your bedroom as you sleep will also help provide your skin with the necessary moisture it needs to prevent dryness. Even just a few nights of running a humidifier as you sleep will make a difference, and you’ll notice almost an immediate improvement in your skin’s moisture. Be sure to only use either distilled or purified water in your humidifier. Also, make sure that you’re keeping it clean and replacing the filters frequently to ensure that the humid air it’s providing you with is also clean and free of mold and mildew.

Moisturize Often

One of the easiest ways to combat the dryness of winter is to keep your skin moisturized. This is sometimes difficult to get into the habit of, but keeping a travel-sized tube of hand moisturizer in your car or purse will give you easy access to keeping your hands nice and smooth. Moisturizing before you go to bed as well as after taking a shower will also help improve your skin’s dryness as well.

Never Forget Your Lip Balm

Chapped lips are one of the first signs of winter weather, and as the months become colder and drier, our lips just become that much more chapped and cracked. Keeping a tube or tin of your favorite lip balm on your person as often as possible will ensure that your lips continue to be soft and smooth.

As we grow older, all of us experience varying levels of sadness at some point in time. As we start to reflect on our lives, this sadness can sometimes stick with us and in some cases lead to more serious issues like depression or depression-like symptoms. As easy as it is to sometimes get stuck in a negative mindset, there are many ways to fight off these feelings. In this blog, we will examine just a few ways to help keep you and your mind happy and healthy.

Be Active

In previous blogs, we’ve discussed the many benefits of being active and exercising. While physical activity has been proven to provide us with many benefits to our physical health, physical activity has also been proven to provide us with benefits to our mental health as well. Some studies have shown that exercise can be an effective combatant of depression as antidepressants. As we grow older, being able to do strenuous or rigorous exercises may not always be as easy as they once were, but don’t worry — incorporating any amount of physical activity and movement into your daily routine has been proven to have positive effects on your mental state. Whether it’s taking a short walk around the block, taking the stairs instead of the elevator or finding other ways to incorporate extra steps into your day, it all helps.

Laugher is the Best Medicine

While this one comes off as a little obvious, think about it: the exact opposite of sadness and depression is happiness and laughter! Studies have shown that a healthy dosage of laughter can decrease stress, increase relaxation, and increase the release of endorphins. Endorphins are the chemicals in our brains that bring us feelings of positivity, so more than just the temporary relief of laughing at something funny, laughter can bring us a noticeable shift in our moods overall.

Be Social!

One of the many causes of depression in people, both young and old, is general loneliness. Not socializing with people can not only make us feel lonely, but once we feel alone, not being able to socialize with others can leave us to sit and get stuck with our negative thoughts. Being able to talk to friends can do wonders for our mood. Whether it’s going to see a movie (and laughing!), going out for a walk or enjoying a cup of coffee, socialization has been proven to help fight off depression. While you may not always feel like being around people, isolation can make depression worse. Being social is an easy and powerful way to ward off depression.

Get Some Rest!

One thing that can actually make depression worse is a lack of adequate rest. That magic number of eight hours sleep per night rings true, and many have suggested that inadequate rest can make depression worse. Sleeping well provides you with much needed energy for the day, and that energy can give you a boost of positivity and vitality that can help you combat the negative feelings of depression.

While many of us may find chiropractic discomfort to be something that typically comes with age, it’s not necessarily the case and, more importantly, it’s something that can be easily remedied. Maybe you are experiencing minor and/or occasional lower back pain, maybe you’re recovering from a more serious injury, or maybe you’re somewhere in between. Whatever the case may be, you don’t have to live in pain. There are many things that you can do and changes you can make to your lifestyle that will greatly improve your overall chiropractic health. In this blog, we will be looking at just a few simple things that you can do to live more comfortably and free of chiropractic pain.

Smokers Beware

While the dangers of smoking are quite well understood by most, what many don’t realize is that smoking doesn’t just affect your lungs, it can also affect your back. Studies show that those who smoke or have smoked are more likely to experience back pain. Smoking, specifically nicotine, actually decreases blood flow to soft tissue and causes small blood vessels to compress, which can cause back pain. Smoking is already a significant health risk to begin with, and quitting smoking can improve your health in so many ways from the moment you stop.

Sleep Isn’t For the Weak

Your bedroom can make quite a difference in your chiropractic health. Making sure that your mattress is firm enough is a good start. A worn out mattress or one with too much give won’t be giving you enough back support, and while initially it may feel like a softer mattress is the more comfortable option, you need to make sure that your back is being supported. In addition to this,
the position that you sleep in can also affect your chiropractic health. Sleeping on your stomach, for example, can put stress on your back by causing your head and neck to contort into uncomfortable positions. Make these improvements and you’ll start to see results very quickly.

Activity is Key

Much like many other health issues, one big way to improve your overall chiropractic health is to increase your overall level of activity. Exercise is key to to living a long and healthy life, and being active keeps your body moving and blood flowing. Strenuous activities aren’t ideal if you’re currently experiencing chiropractic issues, but getting up and moving around can be incredibly helpful. Even something as simple as walking has been proven to have many health benefits.

What’s On Your Feet?

While this partially ties in with the previous point, having comfortable shoes can certainly make an improvement in decreasing and/or preventing things like lower back pain. Even if you aren’t running, getting a comfortable pair of shoes for day to day wear will make more of a difference than you realize. Even if you’re not walking everywhere, you are still on our feet for a lot of the day. Think of your shoes as a bed for your feet-you want your shoes to provide proper cushioning for your feet in the same way that you want a mattress to provide good support for your back. Getting comfortable shoes will help you greatly.

Treat Yourself to a Massage

Perhaps as a way to reward the increased activity, treating yourself to a massage every now and again can certainly help with back pain and other chiropractic problems. Given, this shouldn’t be your only way of relieving any sort of chiropractic pain or discomfort, but getting a massage alongside making other improvements to your lifestyle can definitely help reduce pain. A good massage will encourage blood flow, which can speed up the overall process of relief. Massaging those sore muscles can help decrease built up tension, and through stretching and exercise, you can greatly reduce the overall tension in your back. Practicing all of these things together can certainly lead to improved chiropractic health.

By following five simple steps, you will be well on your way to experiencing improvements in your overall chiropractic health. This is by no means a complete guide, though, and for more specific guidance, contact your primary care doctor or chiropractor.
