One of the most common health issues that seniors may encounter is diabetes. While there are many factors that can cause the development of diabetes, there are many things that you can do to prevent yourself from developing it as well. Because of the commonality of diabetes, we’ve decided to dedicate a series of blogs to it. In part one of this blog series, we will give you an overview of the disease as well as some of the causes of it.

What is Diabetes?

There are two types of diabetes, most commonly referred to as simply Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes. Type 1 diabetes usually develops in people before adulthood. This type of diabetes is caused by your body failing to produce sufficient amounts of insulin, which causes your blood sugar and energy levels to be low. Type 1 diabetes is the less common variant of the two, and for seniors, it’s type 2 diabetes that is of a higher level of concern. A majority of people who are diabetic have type 2 diabetes, which is caused by excess blood sugar as well as low levels of insulin. While type 1 diabetes can be chronic, type 2 diabetes can be brought on by a variety of factors, some of which we will look at in the next section.

What Causes Type 2 Diabetes?

While diabetes can be hereditary or genetic, type 2 diabetes can develop because of a person’s lifestyle. One of the causes of type 2 diabetes in seniors is a lack of physical activity. We’ve discussed the importance of staying active in previous blog posts, and fighting off the risk of diabetes is just one of the many advantages that you can enjoy by exercising more frequently. While some people are more susceptible to developing type 2 diabetes than others, staying active will help ensure that your risk is lower than it already was.

Another cause of type 2 diabetes has to do with weight and diet. If you’re overweight or obese, you are at a higher risk of developing type 2 diabetes than someone who is at a healthier weight. Even the slightest bit of weight loss can be of great benefit for someone who is overweight, helping reduce their risk of developing type 2 diabetes. Additionally, your diet also plays a role in your risk of developing the disease. Eating foods that are high in sugar and fats can not only contribute to being overweight, but it can also put you at greater risk of developing diabetes. Taking control of both of these factors are a great way to lower your risk.We will take a deeper look at this in part two of our blog series.

We hope you found this information on type 2 diabetes, as well as some of its causes, useful.
